Project Overview
FishSounds Educate is a free educational program that aims to use the topic of bioacoustics (biological sounds) to encourage future conservation leaders and enhance ocean literacy across Canada. The program derives content from scientific papers, bioacoustic experts, and FishSounds.net. By incorporating these resources with feedback from educators, we developed workshops and seminars for elementary- to university-level learners and the public. Educational content themes include sound propagation in the ocean, anatomy of fish hearing and sound production, the diversity of fish sounds, how scientists record and analyze underwater sounds, and exploring how humans are impacting marine soundscapes. We collaborate with educators in a range of settings, including schools, aquariums, nature clubs and other public education programs. We began visiting these spaces in January 2023, and are continuing to make connections with educators interested in participating.
