Project Overview

FishSounds Educate is a free educational program that aims to use the topic of bioacoustics (biological sounds) to encourage future conservation leaders and enhance ocean literacy across Canada. The program derives content from scientific papers, bioacoustic experts, and FishSounds.net. By incorporating these resources with feedback from educators, we developed workshops and seminars for elementary- to university-level learners and the public. Educational content themes include sound propagation in the ocean, anatomy of fish hearing and sound production, the diversity of fish sounds, how scientists record and analyze underwater sounds, and exploring how humans are impacting marine soundscapes. We collaborate with educators in a range of settings, including schools, aquariums, nature clubs and other public education programs. We began visiting these spaces in January 2023, and are continuing to make connections with educators interested in participating.

Program format

1. Workshop
Our team will visit your classroom or educational space to deliver a workshop, tailored to your topics of interest and the education level of the participants. These can be conducted over Zoom or in-person, across Canada.
2. Seminar
An expert in bioacoustics will present a seminar on one of the following topics:
  • FishSounds: a website to compile and disseminate research on fish sound production
  • Unravelling ocean noise: fish sounds, noise pollution, and managing soundscapes
  • Bioacoustic applications: Integrating bioacoustics into stock assessment, population ecology, and conservation
  • Sound management: Canada’s ocean noise policy and the implications for British Columbia
  • Marine soundscapes: fish boops, cracking ice, algae bubbles, and more
  • Soundscape ecology: more than just dolphin clicks and whale songs
